What Is a Fengshui Period?

In the Flying Stars (玄空飛星) system of Fengshui, time is divided into cycles of 20 years called Periods (運, yùn). Each Period is governed by one of the nine Flying Stars, which represents a particular type of Qi with specific qualities. We are currently in Period 9 (九運), which began in February 2024 and runs until 2043.

The Dominant Star of Period 9

Period 9 is governed by the Li Trigram (離卦) and Star 9 — the Purple Star (紫白九星之九紫). This star is associated with Fire, with brilliance and visibility, with technology and innovation, and with matters of the heart. It also governs fame, recognition, and forward momentum.

In practical terms, Period 9 tends to favour industries related to energy, technology, beauty, media, and anything that relies on being seen. The South direction — the home of the Li Trigram — is energised and becomes particularly important during this period.

What Changed From Period 8

During Period 8 (2004–2023), the auspicious Wang Qi (旺氣) resided in the Northeast. Many homes and offices positioned their main entrances, master bedrooms, or important areas facing Northeast to harness this Qi. As of 2024, the Wang Qi has shifted to the South.

This means any Fengshui recommendations made before February 2024 may need to be reviewed. The mountain and water stars that were prosperous in Period 8 have aged — some have become neutral, and some timely stars have become untimely. A full re-audit may be warranted for properties that were set up during Period 8.

Practical Implications for Your Home

If your home faces South or has significant openings on the South side, the energy of Period 9 is potentially very supportive. If your home faces North, it is worth auditing whether the internal layout can be adjusted to activate the more favourable sectors under the new Qi map.

It is also worth noting that Period 9 amplifies what is already present in a chart. A property with good mountain and water star combinations in the South will become significantly more potent. A property with challenging configurations in the South may need remediation work.
