What Is the Friendly Competitor (比肩) in BaZi?

The Friendly Competitor (比肩, abbreviated FR in Yixin Academy's system) is the Ten God that shares the same element and polarity as your Day Master. It is the most literal expression of "same kind" — someone who is structurally your equal in elemental terms. In a chart, FR represents peers, allies, colleagues, and friends who stand alongside you rather than above or below.

What Does FR Indicate in a BaZi Chart?

Friendly Competitor energy in a BaZi chart indicates an affinity for peer relationships and collaborative endeavour. When FR appears in favourable positions, it can represent the support of like-minded people, competitive drive, and the ability to hold your own ground in a crowd. It is the element of self-assertion through solidarity.

The complication is that FR also competes for the same resources — particularly Wealth (DW/IW). In classical BaZi theory, where many FR appear in a chart, wealth can be dispersed or shared across the group rather than concentrated in the individual. This is why a chart heavy in FR can indicate someone who is generous but struggles to accumulate wealth for themselves, or who achieves most when working in groups.

FR in Different Pillars

FR in the Year Pillar may indicate peer-oriented family dynamics or a generational cohort of similar minds. FR in the Month Pillar can indicate a career built through networking and collaboration. FR in the Hour Pillar suggests that the person's legacy and inner world are shaped by competition with — and commitment to — a peer community.

FR and Career

FR energy supports entrepreneurship (especially partnerships), competitive fields, and any career where holding one's position in a group of equals matters. When FR is a favourable god (喜神), the person benefits from collaboration and should actively build peer networks.
