A BaZi chart takes your year, month, day, and hour of birth, maps each to a Stem-Branch pair across four pillars, and produces eight characters that represent the cosmic energetic conditions at the moment you were born. It is not superstition — it is a systematic analytical framework validated over thousands of years, one of the oldest data systems in existence. From these eight characters, a skilled practitioner reads your Five Element balance, your chart structure, and how each ten-year luck cycle interacts with your natal chart. A chart can be read at a basic level or studied in great depth — the more proficient the practitioner, the more layers become visible. At the highest level of mastery, the system can be refined down to the energy quality of individual days.

What does a BaZi chart tell me?

The starting point is always the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar, which represents your core self. From there, we assess the Day Master's strength or weakness, identify the useful god and favourable elements, account for seasonal adjustment (调候), and then layer in the ten-year luck cycles and annual pillars to map each phase of your life. A well-read BaZi chart can analyse wealth, relationships, children, career, and health — and can also reveal periods where caution is warranted. We do not predict death. Not because it cannot be seen, but because it is not told — it is the unwritten professional ethic of every responsible practitioner not to use a person's lifespan to frighten them. What we do is help you understand why a particular period feels smooth or blocked, when to act and when to wait, and when to be careful. The difficult periods are always temporary. Chinese metaphysics is like medicine — a skilled practitioner is, in many ways, a psychological guide, helping people stay grounded and confident when they are lost. Your chart does not change. Do I need my exact birth time for a BaZi chart?

Yes — the Hour Pillar is one of the four pillars in the chart. It affects your later years, your relationship with children, certain personality nuances, and also influences how we assess your Day Master's strength and favourable elements. Without it, the chart is incomplete. That said, a chart built on Year, Month, and Day still gives you a solid foundation for basic analysis. Before the Tang dynasty, practitioners only used the zodiac animal and Nayin Five Elements — the system had not yet developed to the hour level. The Tang dynasty master Li Xu Zhong first used three pillars to calculate destiny. Then in the Song dynasty, Xu Zi Ping established the full Four Pillars system as we know it today, placing the Day Stem at the centre — this is the Zi Ping BaZi system still practised today. If you do not know your birth time, use 12:00 noon as a baseline. A professional practitioner can often deduce the birth hour through specific chart indicators and targeted questions.
